Staying well hydrated in Accra's heat
Simple, practical habits to avoid dehydration — and the warning signs to watch for in children and older adults.
Hot, humid weather increases how much water your body loses through sweat. Children and older adults are especially at risk of dehydration.
Signs of dehydration
- Feeling very thirsty, dizzy or tired
- Dark yellow urine, or passing little urine
- Dry mouth and lips
- In babies: fewer wet nappies, a sunken soft spot, crying without tears
Practical habits
- Carry water and sip throughout the day
- Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, oranges and cucumber
- Limit sugary drinks and alcohol
- Rest in the shade during the hottest hours
Seek urgent care if someone is confused, very drowsy, or not passing urine.
